January is ‘Glaucoma Awareness Month’ – What you Need to Know!

How to detect glaucoma

As a patient here at Vista Vision, you can be assured that Dr. Racoma will not only get you immediately seeing your best with her stellar eye exam, but also know that your long-term sight and eye health are being evaluated and cared for.

Glaucoma is known as the “silent thief of vision” because in the earliest stages patients have zero symptoms. 40% of a person’s sight can be lost before they are even aware of any decreased vision. And as the leading cause of irreversible blindness, early detection and testing is paramount to the long-term preservation of vision.

Vision loss from glaucoma is due to damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is like a cable that carries all the information from the eye to the brain for processing. Although the most common forms of glaucoma occur in middle-aged and elderly patients, glaucoma can affect patients of all ages. Treatments can include topical medication, oral medication, or even surgical procedures, and ensure that continued loss of vision is halted or aggressively slowed down.

So what’s the next step? Early detection is key to stopping the progress of the disease, so a comprehensive eye exam by a qualified eye doctor is key to protect your sight from glaucoma. A comprehensive eye exam includes testing of peripheral vision, measurements of eye pressure, retinal cell evaluations (where glaucoma begins), and a dilated exam of the optic nerve.
